Defibrillator Trial Saves Lives: Why First Aid Training Matters

A recent success story from Ambulance Victoria has highlighted the life-saving impact of defibrillators and bystander first aid. Bernadette Troy, a 30-year-old mother of three, survived a cardiac arrest thanks to a groundbreaking defibrillator trial and the quick actions of those around her. This remarkable event reinforces the importance of accessible emergency equipment and community first aid skills. As a first aid training provider, we are proud to support initiatives that empower Australians to act confidently in emergencies.

The Story

Bernadette Troy’s life changed unexpectedly during a running session with her local group in Heathcote. She suffered a sudden cardiac arrest, but thanks to the swift response of her fellow runners, her life was saved.

Immediately after Bernadette collapsed, her fellow runners called Triple Zero (000) and began CPR. An alert was also sent to local GoodSAM responders, which included off-duty Heathcote Ambulance Community Officer Lee Ridsdale. Lee arrived within minutes, equipped with a CellAED—a compact, fully automatic, single-use defibrillator. After delivering two shocks, Bernadette’s pulse was restored just as paramedics arrived to continue her care and transport her to hospital.

Bernadette’s recovery underscores the importance of preparation, quick action, and innovative technology. Without early CPR and the CellAED, the outcome could have been tragically different.

Why First Aid Training is Essential

While defibrillators are becoming more widely available in public spaces, knowing how to use one is just as vital. This story demonstrates that even the best equipment relies on trained individuals willing to step in during an emergency. First aid training ensures that:

  • You’re prepared: Learn how to assess a situation, perform CPR, and use an AED effectively.
  • You can stay calm: Confidence in your skills reduces panic and enables swift action.
  • You can save lives: Bystander intervention often bridges the gap between an incident and professional medical care arriving.

AED Accessibility: A Community Effort

The Ambulance Victoria trial also sheds light on the need for widespread AED access. While many workplaces, gyms, and schools now have AEDs, there’s room to grow. Businesses and organisations can make a significant impact by investing in this life-saving technology and encouraging staff to attend first aid courses.
