People often have many questions about how long a First Aid certificate stays valid for and when they are required to renew or update their qualifications. In this post we attempt to answer some of your questions.
How long is a First Aid certificate valid for?
Nationally accredited First Aid certificates, such as the Provide First Aid, generally stay current for three years. In New South Wales, the SafeWork approved First Aid in the Workplace Code of Practice states that workplace First Aiders should renew their first aid qualifications every three years. The Code of Practice also states that first aiders should complete refresher training in CPR annually. Such regular training for first aiders, is to refresh their first aid knowledge and skills and to confirm their competence to provide first aid.
When does a first aid certificate expire?
The Provide First Aid certificates stay valid for three years from date of issue. The date of issue is typically the date of which you completed the training course.
How often do I need to renew/redo/refresh/update my first aid certificate?
In NSW, refresher First Aid training should take place every three years. This is recommended by First Aid in the Workplace Code of Practice. This re-certification should take place prior to the expiry of the three-year period.
How do I know when my First Aid certificate will expire?
You may need to check your First Aid Statement of Attainment (certificate) for the date in which you completed the course. Your expiry period would typically be three years from this date. If you have lost or misplaced your certificate you may need to contact the Registered Training Organisation (business) in which you completed your training for details of your training.
Why should I renew my First Aid certificate?
You should renew or update your First Aid certificate to keep it valid. It is also worthwhile to update your First Aid certificate regularly so that you are informed of the current First Aid guidelines and so that your First Aid skills and knowledge are maintained and you are ready to provide First Aid.
My first aid certificate has expired, what do I need to do?
If your First Aid certificate has expired you will be required to complete a full First Aid course.
