How to Treat a Burn – First Aid Guidelines

Burns can happen in an instant, whether from a hot surface, boiling water, or a household accident. Knowing how to treat a burn quickly and effectively can prevent further injury and promote faster healing. At Coastal First Aid, we follow the latest Australian and New Zealand Committee on Resuscitation (ANZCOR) Guidelines to provide the most up-to-date and effective first aid advice.

You can access the full ANZCOR guideline here: ANZCOR Guideline 9.1.3 – First Aid for Burns.

The Essential Steps for Burn Treatment

If someone has suffered a burn, ANZCOR recommends you follow these key steps:

1. Ensure Safety First

  • Remove the person from danger if it is safe to do so.
  • Do not put yourself at risk—avoid entering burning or toxic environments.
  • If the burn is severe, call 000 (Australia’s emergency number) immediately.

2. Cool the Burn Immediately

  • Run cool running water over the burn for at least 20 minutes.
  • Cooling should start as soon as possible, but can still be effective up to three hours after the injury.
  • If no water is available, use any clean, cool liquid.
  • Do not use ice or ice water, as this can worsen the injury.

3. Remove Constricting Items

  • If possible, remove rings, watches, or jewellery from the affected area before swelling occurs.
  • Do not remove clothing stuck to the burn, as this may worsen the injury.

4. Cover the Burn

covering burns
  • Use a loose, non-stick dressing, such as a clean cloth or plastic cling film.
  • Do not wrap cling film tightly around a limb—simply place it over the burn.
  • Keep the person warm to prevent hypothermia, especially in children and the elderly.

5. Know What NOT to Do

  • Do not break blisters, as this increases the risk of infection.
  • Do not apply ointments, creams, butter, or powders to the burn.
  • Do not use ice, as this can cause more tissue damage.

The Importance of First Aid Training

While this guide provides life-saving knowledge, nothing replaces proper hands-on first aid training. First aid courses provide:

  • Confidence to act in emergencies – Many people freeze in high-pressure situations. With training, you gain the skills and confidence to take control and provide effective assistance.
  • Practical skills to apply techniques correctly – Reading about first aid is helpful, but physically practicing first aid techniques can make a huge difference in real-life scenarios.
  • Up-to-date knowledge on best practices – Guidelines change based on new research. A first aid course ensures you are using the most effective, scientifically backed methods.
