What to Expect on the Day of Your First Aid Course in Port Macquarie

You’re looking to book your first aid course in Port Macquarie — great move! But if it’s your first time (or it’s been a few years), you might be wondering what the day actually looks like. Here’s everything you need to know before you walk through the door at our first aid courses.

Whether you’re completing a Provide First Aid (HLTAID011), a Provide CPR (HLTAID009), or a Child Care First Aid (HLTAID012) course, the format at Coastal First Aid is designed to be practical, straightforward, and — dare we say it — genuinely enjoyable. Our trainers are known for keeping things engaging without dumbing anything down.

Let’s walk through the day from start to finish.

Before You Arrive: The Online Pre-Learning

For both our first aid and CPR courses there’s a short online theory component you’ll complete before your face-to-face session. This pre-learning is delivered through our partner RTO, Healthcorp (RTO ID 91222), and covers the foundational knowledge underpinning the practical skills you’ll practise on the day.

Think of it as watching a safety briefing before the actual adventure — it doesn’t take long, and it means you arrive already familiar with key concepts like DRSABCD, the chain of survival, and when to call 000.

Where to Go: Panthers Port Macquarie

All of our Port Macquarie first aid courses are held at Panthers Port Macquarie, located right next to the Settlement City Shopping Centre on Bay Street. It’s one of the best-equipped training spaces in the region — easy to find, with plenty of free parking and straightforward access whether you’re driving from town or coming in from further along the Hastings.

Aim to arrive 10–15 minutes before your course start time. This gives you time to sign in, get comfortable, and have a quick chat with your trainer before things kick off.

What to Bring

You don’t need to bring much — but a few things will make your day easier:

  • Photo ID (driver’s licence or passport)
  • Your USI (Unique Student Identifier) — create one free at usi.gov.au if you don’t have one yet
  • Comfortable, loose clothing you can move around in — you’ll be on the floor practising CPR

How the Day Unfolds

Here’s a rough run-through of what a typical Provide First Aid (HLTAID011) course day looks like:

Welcome & Sign-In You’ll be greeted, sign the attendance register, and get set up in the training room. Your trainer will do a quick intro, cover housekeeping and set the tone for the day — relaxed, no-pressure, and practical.

Practical Skills & CPR Because you’ve already covered the theory online, the face-to-face session gets straight into hands-on practice from the moment you arrive. You’ll start with CPR on mannequins — working through the DRSABCD action plan in real time and building muscle memory for chest compressions and rescue breaths.

AED (Defibrillator) Training You’ll get hands-on time with an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Many people find this the most eye-opening part — AEDs are more intuitive than you’d expect, and knowing how to use one could genuinely save a life.

Injuries & Medical Emergencies Next, you’ll work through the practical skills for a range of real-world emergencies: bleeding and wound management, fractures, burns, anaphylaxis, asthma attacks, seizures, strokes, and choking. You’ll practise applying bandages, using triangular slings, and responding to scenarios under simulated pressure.

Wrap-Up & Certificate Once you’re signed off, your trainer will answer any remaining questions and wrap up the session. Your nationally recognised Statement of Attainment is issued on the same day — no waiting around.

What to Wear

Comfort is the priority. You’ll be getting down on the floor to practise CPR and recovery position techniques, so:

  • Wear comfortable, flexible clothing — active wear or casual clothes work well
  • Avoid tight jeans or restrictive outfits
  • Flat, closed-toe shoes are ideal
  • If you have long hair, tie it back

Your Certificate & How Long It’s Valid

Once you’ve completed the course, your nationally recognised Statement of Attainment is issued through Healthcorp (RTO ID 91222) — the official qualification recognised across all Australian workplaces and industries.

Your Provide First Aid (HLTAID011) certificate is valid for 3 years, with your CPR component (HLTAID009) needing to be renewed annually. Many workplaces and professional registrations require proof of this annual CPR renewal — something worth keeping on your radar.
