In Ballarat, paramedics praised bystanders who performed CPR on a man who suffered a cardiac arrest after he touched live power lines.

The man, believed to be about 50, was setting up speakers for today’s Cycling Australia national road championships when the accident happened just before midday near the intersection of Mt Buninyong Rd and the Midland Highway.

Cyclist Paul McDonald was riding past and jumped in to help administer CPR.

“It’s not a situation you choose to put yourself into, but you do what you can to get the best outcome for everyone involved,” he said.

Mr McDonald, who was in town to help with the championships, said he was shaken by the incident.

“It’s not a situation you expect to come across every day but you just remain calm and do what you can to help out in the situation,” he said.

“We were just trying to keep this guy going until the ambulance got there.”
